Northern driver answers SOS from Borcoskie

Brent Borcoskie had to work a lot harder than he expected to find a driver for My Wingman at Motukarara on Sunday, and he’s ended up having to go as far as the North Island to solve the problem.
The son of Captain Crunch tackles a $12,000 Revell Douglas Memorial Series Junior Drivers heat, where a free win is in the offing. But finding a junior to drive one of the pre-post favourites was harder than he anticipated.
“I can’t find anyone to drive him, and I’ve tried half a dozen,” Borcoskie told RaceForm initially.
“I had hoped my nephew Thomas would drive him, but he said he’s got one, and then as I worked my way down the list, they all had drives.”
Eventually, Borcoskie was able to secure Cambridge-based Emily Johnson, who is chasing an overall win in the annual series that is now in its fifth year. Johnson recorded a win and two placings in the first three heats at Hawera and Taupo.
My Wingman has really found his footing over summer – when he behaves. He’s won twice and run a brave second in his last six runs, the other three all non-events due to gallops.
“He seems to be strengthening up now and has sort of worked it all out.
“It felt like he was going through the motions a wee bit, but I’m hoping he’s turned the corner now.”
My Wingman cruised to victory on the grass at Rangiora last time out, which followed a very brave second to the classy Ukraine at Addington, the rest of the field more than seven lengths away.
He’s drawn one this week, and that should ensure he lands in the lead or trail, which is always preferable.
“I’m hoping he has the gate speed to lead – the night he just got beaten by Ukraine, he showed good speed to find the early lead.”
Borcoskie has maiden trotter Majestic Trix in the $12,000 Peter Smith Memorial Trot earlier in the day and he’s just hoping to see her do everything right. When she did that two starts ago, she ran a creditable third at Methven.
“She’s an improving trotter but can gallop for no reason. I think she’s going to pick up a win soon, because she’s felt really strong in her last couple of runs.”
