Power And Glory was the chant that echoed around Sydney’s Wentworth Park following the greyhounds stunning Friday evening victory in the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase.
Power And Glory jumped sweetly from the five trap, getting himself handy to the pace when racing into the first turn.
The joint race favourite seized the race lead when entering the back straight and it was a lead that Power And Glory was never going to hand up, running searing sectionals when delivering his sizzling race record 29.15 520m chase.
It was a remarkable time considering the blustery conditions that the race was run in.
Co-favourite Enza Sparkles was gallant when finishing 7.25 lengths adrift for her second placing, while Smooth Plane finished third another 1.25 lengths behind.
Trainer Ken Burnett was rightfully excited when interviewed immediately post-race, telling the.dogs.com.au, “He’s a power machine – he’s Power And Glory!”
The large on course crowd relentlessly cheered Power And Glory and then burst into a rousing edition of Sweet Caroline.
There was raw emotion attached to the victory for Power And Glory’s owner Jeff Eastburn, who had brought the greyhound as a pup for just $4,000, having recently recovered from serious illness.
Last April, Power And Glory won the prestigious Gr.1 Golden Easter Egg, however Eastburn missed the victory, having been rushed to hospital 48 hours earlier, requiring a couple of urgent operations.
It was a week after his operations when Eastburn learnt about his greyhounds’ momentous Golden Easter Egg victory.
The 79-year-old was on course Friday evening to saviour Power And Glory’s win which earned him a cool million dollars.
Power And Glory became only the second greyhound to win the Golden Easter Egg and Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase Group One double.
Former Trackside presenter Liz Whelan hosted the.dogs.com.au coverage of the meeting from the course and she was in awe of Power And Glory.
“Power And Glory has to be one of the best dogs racing I have ever seen in my life. He gallops so beautifully. He was phenomenal, the perfect race dog.
“The trainer was incredible being so very passionate about the sport. They have always said that the Million Dollar Chase is a like changing experience – it certainly is,” enthused Whelan.
Liz Whelan had identified the stayer Without A Trace as her meeting best bet and the Peter Presutto trained stayer gave her army of supporters no cause for concern when she cruised to effortless 41.37 win the Gr.2 Sydney Cup over the 720m distance.
“That was an incredible performance by Without A Trace, in what were very hard conditions. There’s no doubt that she is a star stayer for the future.
“The entire MDC meeting was extremely well run with huge crowd engagement, while maintaining the focus on the greyhounds. It was a fun night,” advised Whelan.
The MDC meeting was also thoroughly enjoyed by Cantabrians Garry Cleeve, his son Anthony with his partner Chloe Watson, along with her sister Zahara.
The Christchurch GRC have adopted an initiative of sending youth license holders to experience big ticket Australian greyhound racing.
Chloe Watson was the recipient for the MDC meeting, and it was an experience that she will never forget as she explains.
“It was amazing being at Wentworth Park to experience the big race atmosphere. It was a great experience, very different to racing here.
"I’m very grateful to the Christchurch club for receiving this opportunity. Being able to get away for a couple of days was really good for mental stress relief.
“I certainly would recommend the experience to other young industry people,” a grateful Watson explained about her first trip away from of New Zealand.
Garry Cleeve picks up on the experience. “It certainly was an eye opener for them It was a great experience for the young ones to see and experience racing on the other side of the Tasman.
“The trip was also a very good mental health exercise for them. It provides them with opportunities for any of them who might be serious in pursuing prospects over there.
“It was a great night of first class racing with the local club doing it very well. The whole experience was hugely successful.”
Pawnote: Power And Glory is by Hooked On Scotch, the sire of the star Kiwi bred and owned greyhound Postman Pat, the third-place finisher in the 2023 MDC final.
Also finishing fourth in the same 2023 MDC final was the 2024 New Zealand Cup winner One Hot Bandit, who last month was named as the 2024/25 NZ Greyhound of the Year.
